چکیده

The annual cycles of abundance of fish larvae and their zooplankton prey were analysed in relation to the biomass and production of size-fractionated phytoplankton on the Scotian Shelf (North-west Atlantic). Outside the spring bloom of large (>5 ìm) phytoplankton (February to April), the small-sized fraction of phytoplankton (<5 ìm) contributed the bulk of total primary production. The production of copepod nauplii and copepodites was sustained throughout the year and fish larvae specializing on copepod prey occurred year-round. Species feeding on a mixed diet of copepods, cladocerans and/or appendicularians were restricted to periods of maximum temperature in summer and early autumn. Two short trophic pathways (two links) from primary producers to fish larvae were identified: the herbivorous food chain (large phytoplankton]calanoid copepods]fish larvae) and the large-microphage shunt of the microbial food web (small phytoplankton]appendicularians/pteropods]fish larvae). The year-round production of fish larvae and the fact that several of their major prey (appendicularians, thecosome pteropods, cladocerans, and cyclopoid copepods) exploit the microbial food web, challenge the tenet that the feeding of marine fish larvae depends primarily on the reproduction of herbivorous calanoid copepods grazing the spring and autumn blooms of large phytoplankton.

Decline in top predator body size and changing climate alter trophic structure in an oceanic ecosystem.

Globally, overfishing large-bodied groundfish populations has resulted in substantial increases in their prey populations. Where it has been examined, the effects of overfishing have cascaded down the food chain. In an intensively fished area on the western Scotian Shelf, Northwest Atlantic, the biomass of prey species increased exponentially (doubling time of 11 years) even though the aggregat...

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) Diet in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on the Eastern Scotian Shelf

The stomach contents of 68 Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) landed in Port Hood and Canso, Nova Scotia, in 2010, were analyzed to characterize the diet of bluefin tuna at the two locations. Of the sampled fish, 54 stomachs had contents. Pelagic schooling fish such as herring (Clupea harengus) and mackerel (Scomber scombrus) dominated the diets in both regions. However, a number of rare s...

Phytoplankton size structure and primary production in a highly dynamic coastal ecosystem (Rı́a de Vigo, NW-Spain): Seasonal and short-time scale variability

Size-fractionated phytoplankton biomass and primary production, together with net community metabolism, were measured in a coastal ecosystem (Rı́a de Vigo, NW-Spain) during a full annual cycle (July 2001eJuly 2002). On a seasonal scale, this ecosystem was characterized by two distinct oceanographic conditions, namely upwelling and downwelling favourable seasons. During the upwelling season, tota...

Putting Temperature and Oxygen Thresholds of Marine Animals in Context of Environmental Change: A Regional Perspective for the Scotian Shelf and Gulf of St. Lawrence

We conducted a literature review of reported temperature, salinity, pH, depth and oxygen preferences and thresholds of important marine species found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Scotian Shelf region. We classified 54 identified fishes and macroinvertebrates as important either because they support a commercial fishery, have threatened or at risk status, or meet one of the following criteria...

What can size distributions within cohorts tell us about ecological processes in fish larvae?

Marine fish larvae are subject to variable environments, which is probably reflected in their growth and survival rates. Mortality rates are generally high and size-dependent. At the species level, these mortality rates are usually accompanied by correspondingly high growth rates. Here we provide examples from experimental studies with Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and Atlantic herring (Clupea ha...
